We look forward to welcoming you to Myanmar (Burma) for the inaugural Burma Skincare Initiative (BSI) Meeting. This will be the first international dermatology meeting to be held in Myanmar and will bring together Burmese and international dermatology communities for the exchange of knowledge, experience and latest evidence-based practices in dermatology as well as networking opportunities.

World-class dermatologists, dermatology specialist nurses and scientists from the UK and Europe will provide the lectures and workshops at the meeting which will take place at the heart of Burma’s economic capital, Yangon (Rangoon). The meeting will be held in the newly opened Wyndham Grand Hotel in the centre of Yangon and there will be ample opportunities for networking including at the magnificent Karawait.

We founded the BSI following a visit to dermatology centres in Yangon and Mandalay in December 2018. We identified significant unmet needs in dermatological care for the people of Myanmar. The BSI aims to improve access to skincare in Myanmar in a sustainable manner by working with the country’s dermatological and healthcare communities across the three domains of education, research and clinical services. The BSI 2020 meeting will be amongst the first steps in this process.

Burma and the British has a long and romanticised history. Rangoon in the 1920s, was home to many novelists and poets alike: from George Orwell and Somerset Maugham to Pablo Neruda. Myanmar hosts a collective of diverse landscapes with mesmerising quality woven together by the fascinating cultures and traditions of 135 ethnic groups, not to mention the food and the people with unparalleled hospitality, that bring the country to life. It also contains the newly awarded 2019 UNESCO world heritage site, Bagan – the first Kingdom of Burma founded in the 9th century AD with >2,000 remaining temples over an area of 104 km2. February is an ideal time to visit Myanmar and we do hope that you will stay on a little longer after the conference so as to visit what this wonderful but little-known country has to offer.
